// Data Description

This is a complete dump of the raw simulation outputs used in this paper. If you make use of any outputs, please cite the paper and link back to this page. Comments and questions should be addressed to volker@cheleb.net (or volker@physik.uzh.ch).

The data is arranged into 7 sets of 12 simulations. Each archive contains one simulation. Per archive, the following files are available.

Out_*.dat Heliocentric coordinate outputs. One per million steps.
Energy_*.dat Energy & angular momentum. One line per million steps.
Collision_*.dat Log of collisions.
Ejections_*.dat Log of ejections. Also includes particles falling into the sun.
master.out, Run_*.dat, info_*.dat Runtime logs.
time_*.dat Timing information.
initial.dat, param.dat Initial conditions, parameter file.

Files are space separated text. Their format is described in the Genga Documentation. A number of supporting Python functions can be found on Github. In particular, io_helpers.py contains loading functions. An IPython notebook describing access may also be of interest. We currently do not provide Python code to reproduce the figures and tables, but may do so in the future. Please get in touch if you are interested.

If you wish to reproduce (rerun) the simulations, please note:

Simulations are evolved for 9 billion time steps with a step size of 6 days. Outputs are written every million steps. Overlapping particles are merged (perfect sticking) and retain the ID of the more massive particle. Particles experience gas drag for the first few million years. For more details, see the paper.

Note that NJS runs 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 have corrupted ejection files.

Also note that all runs may have partially corrupted collision files. Please get in touch by e-mail if you wish to use these.

Further, EJS/Steep, EJS/Heavy, CJS/Steep, and CJS/Heavy have incorrect values for the energy conservation because the loss of energy from interactions with the gaseous disk was wrongly accounted for internally. If this is corrected for, energy is conserved at a level at or below 0.0001.

If you don't like dealing with raw simulation outputs, we also provide some processed data that can be easily be read into Python for analysis. In particular, we provide coordinate outputs (for each run, the file containts all particles and all timesteps), collisions (for each run, the file contains all collisions along with their collision geometry as well as specific impact energy), as well as tabulated locations of the lowest order mean motion and secular resonances with the Jupiter-Saturn system.

The processed data is stored as Pandas Dataframes, which are wrapped in an HDF5 file.

Finally, a note on the collision files. When Genga detects a collision between two particles, the coordinates and velocities written in the collision file do not correspond to the state at impact (but rather when the integrator determines that there will be a collision). To derive the impact geometry, forward integration of the two bodies is required, which is a post-processing step. In the NJS, EJS, and CJS runs, we used an older version of Genga where the collision files contain coordinates and velocities at too low numerical precision to reconstruct (forward integrate to) the geometry at the time of impact.
